Coffee Project NY co-owners and San Franciscan Roaster clients Chi Sum Ngai and Kaleena Teoh recently announced the opening of their third location, a 3,750-square-foot Long Island City venue with a brand new SF-25 commercial coffee roaster, a coffee library, the only Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) Premier Training Campus in New York City, and a public café where their deconstructed lattes and other beverages will be served. Today, we're sitting down with Chi Sum Ngai to hear more about the journey behind this Training Campus and what's next for Coffee Project NY!

Today, Roast Magazine announced the winners of two of the most prestigious awards that exist in the roasting community: Coffee By Design has been named 2020 Macro Roaster of the Year, and Mostra Coffee has been named 2020 Micro Roaster of the Year. Congratulations to these two fine roasters, and all the finalists!

The San Franciscan Roaster is a carefully constructed machine made for the purpose of roasting. As any specialty coffee aficionado is aware, roasting is an art as well as a science; this means that any alteration to the material, composition, and other variables will affect the process and the roastmaster’s ability to control or define the final roast. The makeup of our machines enhances the ability for unique roasts, which have a big impact on the final cup. It’s why our carefully crafted design has considered the architecture, the materials, and unique characteristics —such as the thickness of the drum—to create a stable thermal platform and the perfect conditions for a consistent, premium, and one-of-a-kind roast.

At Purple Door Coffee in Denver, Colorado, the beloved brewed beverage is more than just a caffeine kick; it is a catalyst that helps transform the lives of young people. Purple Door Coffee has helped homeless youth transition from life on the streets to meaningful employment via job training at their coffee shop and—more recently—in their roasting operation. Their name comes from a central belief within their mission; the color purple, they write, is often associated with royalty, but—as a faith-based organization— they believe everyone is royalty, as the true king lives inside us all, and we thus possess innate value worthy of opportunity, love, and kindness. His door is always open. Hence, the name Purple Door Coffee.
